On March 15, 2016, the High Commissioner H.E Lazarus Amayo attended the Kenya Airways 40th Anniversary Luncheon at the Simpsons, Savoy Hotel in London.
In his opening statement, Mr. Bruce Watson, Kenya Airways Sales Manager UK & Ireland noted that despite the various challenges faced by the airline it recorded an operating profit of KShs 949 million in the first half of FY 2016/2017. Passenger numbers grew 4.2 percent to 2.2 million with a 14 percentage points increase in Intra-Africa traffic. He further noted the Airline was committed to enhancing this performance in the coming years.
The High Commissioner while delivering the keynote address congratulated Kenya Airways, for the excellent performance during the last 40 years since it was incorporated on 22nd January 1977. He emphasized that the UK continues to be a valuable partner in Kenya’s economic development and a major source of Foreign Direct Investment and further noted that the United Kingdom is the largest source market for Kenya’s tourism. The High Commissioner underscored that the Government had put in place various initiatives to promote Kenya as a tourism destination.
At the event, Kenya Airways recognized the exemplary performance of some tour operators and travel agents for the last one year in the UK. The winners included the following: Best Tour Operator – Kuoni; Best Activities Tour Operator – Exodus; Best online Travel Agent – Expedia; Best Consolidator – Southall Travel; Best Travel Management Company – HRG; Best Retail Agent – Flight Centre; Best Group Agent – Action Challenge UK; Best Specialist Agent for Missionary Segment – Diversity and a Special Agents Loyalty Award for 40 years’ Service went to Somak Holidays.
